In my opinion, McEwan’s best work yet.
The story so bold, told from the perspective of an unborn child, a narrative voice McEwan grants with an otherworldly wisdom.
From this perspective, it feels as though he can comment on some of today’s most pressing issues, from the sensitivity of a child to its parents actions, to looking at the world from an outsider’s perspective.
The storyline at first seems a little unbelievable – why would the child’s own mother be conspiring to murder his father? But as the plot thickens, McEwan builds a suspense that keeps the pages turning, right until the bitter end.
